VINEYARDS

The production areas permitted by the DOP Cangas consist of land considered ideal for grape production, located in the following areas: : Allande, Cangas del Narcea, Degaña, Grandas de Salime, Ibias, Illano, Pesoz and some areas of Tineo. All of these areas are located in the Southwestern part of Asturias.

HIGH MOUNTAIN VITICULTURE

The vineyards in the DOP Cangas area are slate soil vineyards, and so viticulture is defined as “heroic”.  A visit to the area means traveling to ancient times:  wild forests, old vineyards and artisans.  A mixture of tradition and evolution are translated into special vineyards that provide grapes of exceptional quality.

Asturias is part of the country recognized by CERVIM as High Mountain (or Heroic) Viticulture, an exclusive designation in Spain shared only with DO Ribeira Sacra in Galicia and DO Priorat in Catalunya.

High Mountain vineyards are characterized by:

- Areas located 500m or more above sea level

- Areas with slopes over 30%

- Vineyards which consist of small parcels

- Terraced vineyards, due to the steep slopes

Due to these similarities, areas of Heroic Viticulture:

- Do not allow for access of machines - all work is done by hand

- Small vineyards, sometimes scattered and usually organized in terraces.

- Small, family properties, where viticulture usually is not the main source of income.

- The cost to modernize vineyards usually requires large investments

- Adverse climatic conditions: rain, cold weather, etc

- Grape varieties native to the area

- Vineyards locates in very beautiful areas, with touristic value.
